DCU Preview: Boomerang

First appearing in Flash# 117 (1960), Captain Boomerang was one of the original Flash Rogues. He was camp. Whod’ever think of making a costume with boomerangs as a pattern? He probably made it from his mother’s curtains.

Later on in his career, Captain Boomerang would be forced into the Suicide Squad. One of the longer running members, he showed enough combat prowess and undercover skills to be a boon to the squad. He remained with the squad until it disbanded.

The end of the original Captain Boomerang came in the Identity Crisis miniseries. Owen Mercer found himself obsolete and wanted to put himself back on the map. He was contracted to kill Jack Drake, Tim Drake’s father. He was eventually shotdown in the showdown which ended up in a double takedown. (Hey, he was camp okay)

There’s been two version so far of Captain Boomerang in VS, both appearing during the JLA expansion and a decent two drop at that.

But what am i doing focusing on Captain Boomerang. Oh yeah, it’s a preview article. Well, Captain Boomerang’s legacy didn’t end there. He had a son, Owen Mercer who would take up his mantle. With “Razorangs” and speedbursts to rely on, he’s been a villain and a hero during his super-powered career, staying for sometime with the Outsiders. Owen Mercer eventually turned out to also be the half brother of Bart Allen. So far Owen has had 2 cards also that came out. The 2nd one has been a mainstay for the Outsiders deck.

Okay, okay, enough teasing. You’re after the preview card. Here it is.

He’s the biggest version of Captain Boomerang you’ve seen so far. He’s an average 5 drop, belongs to both the Rogues and Suicide Squad (the newest teams featured in DCU). I have a dislike for large drops being concealed, but his power makes more than up for it. Going with the theme of the Suicide Squad, getting them KO’d brings you benefits. Not only does Owen Mercer<>Captain Boomerang return to your hand, he brings a card of your choice back to your hand for future use (or immediate if you can KO him when you build your deck right). It really is a preview of the Suicide Squad’s strategy which will be at your disposal.

Oh, you stayed long enough, here’s a bonus.

Boomerang accelerates library manipulation. The early drops of father and son may eventually net you some important cards early on in the game and reminiscent of their bounce abilities. Boomerang also allows you to maintain some card advantage or important power-ups later on in the game. Captain Boomerang’s legacy does live on in DCU and it doesn’t disappoint.
