Number 10: Toshiro – Icy

Toshiro – Icy would have been much higher on the list had it not been for the errata for Toshiro – Ready for Action. Nevertheless, the ability to hold down the opposing board and the opportunity to freely attack twice will make this card stay strong in the tourney scene, and probably the most powerful card among the cards in the subset. Just make sure he doesn’t get reality checked in the crucial moment.

Squad 8 Regionals Report

Last 17^th of January, 8 Soul Reapers gathered for the monthly Regionals in the battleground of XP. It was to see who would be worth of becoming Captain of the 8^th Squad. Each of us brought our own army to prove our mettle in this tournament. Four of those gathered were already captains of their own respective squad. They were Icy “Cruboy” Cruel of 1^st Squad, Peter “Lionboy” of 5^th Squad, King “Graymalkin” Mahino of the 6^th Squad and yours truly, Captain of our Region’s Squad 7. I had chosen to employ the services of Toshiro and Rangiku for the upcoming contest.

The other remaining 4 participants would have to prove their worth in bearing the title of Squad 8 Captain. Ron “Taleweaver” Ramos brought Byakuya to guide his purist Squad 6 team. Pete “Blitz” Tan had a curved up Toshiro Squad 10 build. Mark “Ozawabinladen” Padua stayed loyal with the Family deck, getting the helping from Kisuke. And the last entrant was Dennis “Lost” Ching who brough along Rukia with Mods in Tow.

Ah, yes…

Interesting. The Bounto have learned to unlock the Portal to Soul Society. The data i could extract from them will be invaluable to my research. A lot may be intimidated by the flood of information suddenly available to them, but I, Korutsuchi, will place this to good use. Good use indeed.

It seems with the challenge the Bounts have posed against Soul Society have raised the bar. The spirit energy of the Squad led by Kenpachi Zaraki has spiked in the charts. His rise from obscurity to claim the seat of Captain in Squad 11 has been well known. Cruel he may appear, he lives to fight and fight he will. While Enjoying Himself, Kenpachi has led his troops to victory. Yumichika, on the team, has proven to be better than his rarely dazzling countenance. It seems the Squad 11 HQ will prove an impenetrable fortress against the invading bounts.

Analysis: Mesmero plays along quite nicely by screwing up any combat tricks our target might have up his sleeve until captured.

Timebroker notes:
Some timelines need to be fixed. We are already in the process of acquiring members of the team to best repair damages to said timeline. It has come to my attention that the exiles are best when the shifts are done early in the game for a midgame barrage. At the crux of our plans is Blink, Earth 295, Clarice Ferguson.

Blink has the ability to accelerate the shift potential of our recruits to jump into the action en masse. For this reason, we have chosen her to lead the strikeforce composed of:

1. Elsie Dee
2. Mimic, Earth 12
3. Mystique<>Mystiq
4. Nocturne
5. Sage

Note that should we be able to pluck these individuals early on, including Blink, our plan is to shift them in the 1st 2 rounds of combat. Only on the 3rd turn do we reveal our strategy.

The Marauders  gained their notoriety when they committed the Mutant Massacre. They came into the Morlock tunnels with guns blazing and out for blood. They quickly established themselves as the most evil SoB’s this side of mutant town by wiping off most of the Morlocks.

Long overdue to appear in VS card form, they’ve finally arrived to give the X-teams a run for their money. They are your army of assassins.

 The Marauders theme benefit with having the opposing board stunned. If i were to compose my own Marauder strikeforce, the following members would be part of the team.

Mystique, Raven is a staple in most legend decks. It would work well with Carrying the Torch or legend decks like Jean Grey and Wolverine, AoA. Moving up the curve, we have Mr. Sinister, Famine. He’s concealed optional and can shut down a character’s activated ability safely in the hidden zone.

I wasn’t really a big fan of X-Force when Liefeld had the New Mutants transformed into a gun-toting militaristic unit led by Cable. Or I probably wasn’t ready for the future right there and then. Granted, Liefeld brought a new direction to Marvel comics in terms of bringing in more grit into the action. When Liefeld left, the popularity of the series waned and eventually received a new direction.

X-statix then came into prominence. I was oblivious to the team until the Marvel Knights expansion came up for VS. I was wondering who they were. All I knew was that Allred (from Madman fame) was the creative force behind it. A good friend of mine lent me the compiled form and it was quite a good read. It reminded me of an old marvel series, Semper Fi, where no hero was safe and all of them were expendable. After 26 issues, the series was cancelled but some members, like Dead-Girl, continue to enjoy success in their own mini-features.

Then after Messiah Complex was finished, Marvel decided to relaunch X-Force. This was a series i started to collect. It intrigued me that Cyclops decided to have a team of X-men dedicated to Black Ops. I wonder what the other X-men would think if they knew the team’s existence. The art was gorgeous since it was painted and reminded me of Rojo. It also had a nice twist on developing the Purifiers and bringing them to greater heights with the return of villains like Bastion, the Magus and all them X-men haters.

So here’s our look into what are the essential cards you will be looking for in the latest VS expansion for the X-Force team.

Around 2 weeks ago, we had a new shipment of VS MUN arriving at our local hobby shop. What was surprising was that around 20 VS players showed up to enjoy the game and watch as the peeps opened packs. VS always brought a lot of smile to the players faces.

So we’re back to discuss the rest of what MEV has brought to X-Factor’s table.  We’ll just jump into the locations that may have impacted the story.

Locations:

Falls Edge is probably the aerie Warren Worthington provided the team. I’m just making a wild guess here since i can’t figure out what issue this pic was taken from. It’s a great card in that it’s a Muir Island for any character cost. This makes sure that on the defense, you keep board presence. A reusable Children of the Atom is always going to get high marks.

Marvel Evolutions will be arriving at our shores in a months time, but at least we’re assured it’s coming now (unlike what happened with MUN). It’s been a drought of VS for sometime in our land, but now some rain will come to satisfy the thirst of parched VS players here.

I jumped for joy when i heard that MEV was focusing on the Messiah Complex as the main story arc. I think it was the best story arc lately from the X-titles with duds since the House of M, the 198 and Rise and Fall of the Shi’ar Empire. And they were featuring one of the teams that’s made a stamp on the continuity of Marvel: X-Factor

I was lucky to be able to collect X-Factor when it started. At first, i was kinda disappointed that the storyline wasn’t focused on good guys vs. bad guys. The catalyst for the group’s formation was Jean Grey’s “ressurection”. It brought back the original X-men together, but under the guise that they were mutant hunters (their true aim being able to train new mutant discoveries, aka the Mutant Talent Center, haha), though they were unwittingly manipulated by Cameron Hodge.

But their main impact in the X-Universe came in the introduction of Apocalypse and his creation of Archangel. After the initial incarnation of the group, X-Factor became a Government organization. Havok was fleshed out as a leader with a bunch of misfits that eventually gelled together. The latest incarnation of the team is under Jaime Madrox’s helm, but sadly, i haven’t had the chance to follow their story.

So has Marvel Evolutions given  X-Factor the justice they deserve? Let’s look at their rollcall and see if the cards match up to the characters/plot twists. Here’s a look at the 1st half of X-Factor cards in MEV and my thoughts on them
